Jesus, Dirty Shoes and Leg Shavings

I was out running in the rain yesterday, and found myself thoroughly enjoying getting my new shoes sopping wet and muddy in the puddles and on the trails. There’s something about getting off-road that just seems so right to me, especially lately. My buddy Don, who I run with every Friday, prefers to keep his new shoes clean and on the shelf until the rain goes away - which of course I’d love to say is an embarrassment to all westcoast outdoor enthusiasts - but since he whooped me in our last marathon in Victoria, I probably don’t have a lot of trash-talking ground to stand on.

But as I was getting my shoes dirty running yesterday, I felt so invigorated – and I was reminded that sometimes I need to get off-road to be awakened out of the hum-drum routine of life and religion that I slip into; to be awakened to the adventure of being pursued and pursuing the fullness of God and the fullness of my humanity; and I’m definitely realizing that that almost always means getting my nice new shoes a little dirty . . .

Don says that shaving my legs will help my time in the Vancouver Marathon on May 6th (this from the guy who doesn’t want to get his shoes dirty!) . . . I’m not sure if that’s a little too off-road for me though . . . I wonder if Jesus would do it?! Maybe if enough bloggers tell me to do it, I just might pull out the hot wax.

I challenge you to get out the hot wax - and then on the next Sunday you preach your sermon in shorts!

Don't shave your legs, but do stay off road in terms of your run with Jesus. Here is hoping you run under 3:20 in the Vancouver Marathon!

what is the "doorway" or "veil" that you keep referring to in your sunday sermons?

Regarding the 'doorway' and the 'veil' . . . I was refering to the fact that apart from Jesus there is a 'dividing wall' or 'veil' that separates us from God. But in Jesus that is removed so that we can enter into a relationship with God and into His Holy presence (because Jesus makes us 'right' with God). As we embrace Jesus and live out of the life He gives us, we step through a 'doorway' into a different dimension of life (a different Kingdom - God's Kingdom) where we increasingly experience who God is and from that the fullness of our humanity.

Call it a "dividing wall", call it a "veil", call it whatever you want but the Bible calls it SIN.

Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

Sadly the church today never uses that word. Is that what is meant by being "culturally relevant?

Call it what it is - Jesus did.

Just looked @ your church website and thought someone should let you all know that you cannot solve some or most of life's issues with Bumper Sticker Slogans.

It seems a flippant way to advertise Church.

Invitation to Blog-commentator # 7 (May 10). I am not a member of this church (not yet) but I call this church home. If all those missions in Langley, to Asia or to India etc. – which you can find on the website - are too flippant for you – why don’t you come with me to one of my Jesus-Missions to the hookers and addicts in the lower East-side of Vancouver? You might call yourself blessed if you have a bumper to stick a slogan. Although you do not have to be a marathon-runner – it might help.

In response to your comment...

Whether I have a bumper or not I consider myself blessed because of my personal relationship to the Lord of my life.

As for the women on the East side - I have numerous as friends who I have helped receive Christ as their personal Saviour as well and I can tell you I did not help them by fixing their life problems with Chocolate and a bath. The problems these women have need far more than Bumper stickers to release them from the hold Satan has on their lives.
